So I couldn’t quite decide on what to discuss for this Blog so I figured I would piggy back off a discussion I heard on ESPN this afternoon. Obviously the biggest thing going on in sports right now is the NCAA tournament. The discussion I heard centered on the question, “is the first 2 days of the NCAA tournament the best time of the year to watch sports?” Several of the sportscasters argued that yes, this is absolutely the best time of the year for watching sports, especially basketball, but I would take a different side to this argument.
I would say that March Madness is a crazy time of year for sports, but for a whole different reason than most people would look at it. It is madness, not because there are so many basketball games being played, eventually resulting in a national champion, but because it is the first month since August that there have been no football games on TV. This thought is slightly depressing. I would argue that any Saturday and Sunday filled with College and Professional football is far superior to the NCAA tournament. As a matter of fact, I would rather watch most teams play in football before I would care to watch them in basketball.
This is not to say that I don’t like to watch basketball from time to time, or that I don’t enjoy the NCAA tournament. I personally would prefer football over any sport that I can watch on TV or see in person. I feel that the game is so much more exciting, with the opportunity for a big play at any moment. It doesn’t consist of watching teams run back and forth across a court hundreds of times in a game. I know that there of many people who would disagree with me on this, but it’s just the way I feel.

ReplyDeleteCaleb,
ReplyDeleteTo tell you the truth I completly agree with you , that football season itself is much more exciting than even the NCAA. As im writing this blog I am in fact watching the games, but its simply because I filled a bracket out and money is on the line here! ha But, honestly how can anyone argue that sitting on the couch on a sat or sunday afternooon with great snacks and great teams is less intresting than guys running back and forth down a court! I have to say I love football season and it makes me also extremely sad that it has already been to long since I have seen it last!!I guess you and I are just going to have to accept that football gone for now . So lets just settle for second best right !!
I completely agree Caleb! I only watch basketball because my boyfriend has played it his whole life and loves it. Football is where it's at. I am a huge, and I mean huge, New England Patriots fan. I have been for as long as I can remember and look forward to Sundays during football season. I can't wait for football to come back. I think that basketball can definitely be entertaining--during the last 2 minutes of the game--but football is exciting every time and all the time!
ReplyDeleteI somewhat agree with what you mean Caleb. I'm kind of two-sided on your argument. While I love March Madness and have been around it for as long as I can remember, I also really enjoy NFL football. Being born in Chapel Hill, and having nearly my whole family attend UNC, I've always loved college basketball and the Tarheels. They really made me appreciate the game and the madness that accompanies it. But living in North Carolina my whole life, and having an affinity for the NFL, I've been a Carolina Panthers fan for as long as I can remember also. So I guess what I'm saying is, that I really enjoy the NFL and the big plays that can happen at almost any moment, but I also really enjoy college basketball and March Madness.
ReplyDeleteI think that the NFL can be very entertaining to watch, but there is a lot going into college basket ball. These players haven't officially made it yet and they are still trying to show the big leagues what they got. Many College athletes put everything on the line in this tournament and it shows. Also we get a look at the potential future of basket ball, seeing these up and coming stars of the game.
ReplyDeleteI am going to disagree with football being more exciting than basketball. While the big plays are really exciting when they happen, I feel like the rest of the game goes by so slowly. I love basketball and how fast paced it is. It's not nearly as stop and go as football. Maybe it's just because I am a huge UNC baskteball fan that I enjoy it more and find it more exciting. March Madness is my favorite time of the year for sports.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I love football. I mean I will watch some of the games, but only because others are watching it. I know whats going on because others tell me, its impossible to ignore, but football is way more entertaining and worth while. Basketball to me just does nothing for me. I hate Carolina which around here seems to be an issue, and I am not someone to argue over Carolina so I just let it go ha. March Madness is exactly what it implies, "Madness" because football is off the TV.
ReplyDeleteCaleb, I heard this argument on ESPN to. I was astonished at the amount of people that agreed that those two days were the best in sports for any year. While I do enjoy watching all the games that go on during this time I never would compare it to the Super Bowl or the NCAA National Championship in Football. I would even say that any golf major or any game 7 of either baseball or basketall. Like I said I do enjoy it but to think that it is the best two days in sports is a bit of a joke.
ReplyDeleteI would much rather watch something other than basketball. I like football and I am counting down the days until baseball season starts. My roommate did not watch a game all year and has become an "expert" since the beginning of the tournament. I picked the opposite of pretty much everything he did just to piss him off...well seems my picks are doing way better than his. No way is the NCAA tournament the greatest thing every, it is not even played at the highest level and it is one in done which makes the unreasonable upsets happen.
ReplyDeleteI honestly do not have a preference of what sport I watch. I personally think sports can be big anytime of the year and that it doesn't take a tournament to glorify the game. The only time I watch sports is when I am with friends at a house gathering with food and drinks. I don't understand the bracket system nor do I particulary care for my favorite shows getting pushed back for basketball.
