Motivation

Recently, a friend and I were having a discussion on what motivates us. What is the driving force behind the things that we do in our life? As I have stated in previous blogs and responses I am a Christian, so a big motivation in my life is to try and be like Christ. I know for a fact a fail at that on a regular basis, but I am a work in progress. But I got to thinking, other than religious motivation what pushes me in my life?
For me, motivation lies in trying to be the best at everything I do. Although I try to be the best I don’t always succeed, but it’s about giving 100% in all aspects of my life. If I am at work, waiting tables, I want to be the best server there. I want my drive and motivation to be reflected in the way I interact with my tables and want the guests to enjoy their experience because of what they see in me. If I am training at the gym, I want to be the best coach that my clients work with. I want them to appreciate the fact that I push them to their limits and enjoy coming and working with me every time they are in the gym. If I am working out myself, I want to beat my previous time or previous weight on a given workout. Not only do I want to beat my old times, but I want to beat every person that posted a time or a weight for that workout. Even in relationships I want to be the best. I want to work hard and earn your trust and respect so that you can come to me time and time again for advice or just to talk.
I don’t want you all to confuse this motivation for being cocky or arrogant, because that is the last thing I am. I have a strong competitive drive in all aspects of my life, and when I got to thinking about it, that is what motivates me day in and day out.
So what about you? What motivates you to work, to play, to get the most out of life? I hope it’s something that comes from deep within you that allows you to get the most out of your existence, because mine sure does.

  1. Your post definitely let all of us in on the "real" Caleb, which is always nice to read about people. I am motivated in a lot of the same ways that you are. I push myself when I am doing homework, writing papers, designing pages at work, and like you, even in relationships. I think that a lot of friendships and relationships would benefit greatly if everyone pushed themselves just a little bit more than they already do to be a better friend, boyfriend/girlfriend, wife/husband, etc. Maybe then everyone would get along better and there would be less divorces.

  2. Motivation is a strong word. There can be so many internal and external factors that might motivate a human being to do something great, or push themselves. There are a lot of different things that motivate me, and sometimes there just isn't enough spark. For me, I try to be like Christ everyday as you said. However I feel that is only something you aspire to to make yourself a better person. That's an unattainable feat because we're all human and by default, humans are sinners. That's what motivates me to be a better person in whatever type of relationship I'm in with another person.

  3. I think motivation is one of the most important factors in life and without it I find it pretty hard to succeed at something!! Through my life every morning I wake up trying to walk in Christ footsteps and try to be the best person I can be. I find Christ very important in my life; I feel he is there to help give me that extra push in being the best I can be! I absolutely love the goals I have made for the future and I pray each day that I will be able to fulfill them through my own personal motivations.

  4. This blog did not demonstrate arrogance at all! Motivation is important because it not only gives us confidence but it pushes us through a lot of stuff. I respect that you try to be the best waiter possible because so many of them are just getting through the day and don't understand that attitude changes or effects everything. I am also very happy to see that Christ does motivate you. It is important to me to remind myself all that he did for us to do what we do everyday. This was a great blog and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

  5. Motivation is a word that I myself struggle with to find and I know being a member of a team we must work together to find our motivation together. It is one of the hardest things to do in life consistently. I like many mentioned use Christ to motivate me, in displaying that I know He wants me to be the best I can be, in doing that I push myself past limitations. Just like a speed limit, you can always squeak out at least 5 more  Motivation can only be found through living life, living the life you set out to life, no one else can tell you what motivates you. It is vital to your success in life to figure out what or who is your motivation to success, I know I am.

  6. Motivation is an interesting thing, sometimes I can be super motivated to do something and sometimes I procrastinate until the point where I have no choice but to get something done. One of the things that motivates me most is working on a film or art project. My friend and I recently finished filming and are in the process of editing a project. Even when we were filming close to 12 hours a day, I didn't even feel tired, just energized to continue and make the movie magic happen. School work is a bit harder for me as far as motivation is concerned.
